This paper will develop your knowledge, skills and understanding about teaching and learning with health and physical education (HPE) for students in the primary and intermediate school setting. Through the critical examination of national curriculum statements, teaching approaches, and learning environments, you will have the opportunity to explore your personal philosophies of health and health education, physicality, movement and physical education, and relationships education, then plan for, apply and reflect on these in practical teaching experiences.

This paper focuses on:

1. The place of health and physical education in the New Zealand Curriculum (Ministry of Education, 2007);

2. The theoretical underpinnings and structure of Health and Physical Education in the New Zealand Curriculum (Ministry of Education, 1999; 2007);

3. The importance of and processes for creating and maintaining caring and inclusive learning communities in health and physical education;

4. Developing quality teaching practices that foster student participation, learning and enjoyment of HPE;

5. Developing subject content knowledge of contemporary HPE.

This paper provides opportunities for you to develop the skills, attributes, and knowledge related to the University of Waikato, Faculty of Education graduate profile and academic rationale and goals, particularly those that relate to the purposes, principles, practices and issues related to HPE. This paper also allows you to develop your professional knowledge, practice, values and relationships as outlined in the Graduating Teacher Standards: Aotearoa New Zealand. Specific standards identified in this paper are 1, 3, 4 & 6 and some aspects of 2, 5 & 7 are also addressed.

This paper has a 12 week structure during the semester as well as the face to face classes of approximately 11.5 hours in total during the two block weeks (the first before semester B starts and the second is during the mid semester recess). Attendance at the face to face sessions for the paper is compulsory as these sessions establish key content and understanding about the paper and the assessment tasks.

Workload

This paper has an expected student workload of 150 hours minimum as a University wide requirement. This time includes 50 hours of lectures, tutorial contact time, teaching/evaluation practice in the school environment and asynchronous online work. Students are expected to complete 100 hours independent preparation and assessment.

Students are expected to:

  • Attend all lectures and tutorials
  • Arrive at lectures and tutorials on time for the duration of the meeting, unless prior arrangements have been made with the appropriate teaching staff, and ready to learn
  • Complete the required readings and tasks to support your face-to-face and online classes
  • Complete all assessment by the due dates and designated times

  • Work collaboratively and professionally with those involved in the paper including in the school setting
